Ayer Springsteen y la E Street Band ofrecieron un memorable concierto en el Madison Square Garden de New York. Bruce salió al escenario diciendo «esta noche vamos a hacer algo que nunca hemos hecho… esperamos que salga bien»… y realmente lo hicieron. El concierto empezó con Thundercrack, todo un aviso de lo que se iba a ver. La interpretación al completo del «The Wild, The Innnocent and The E Street Shuffle» fue memorable, todo un sueño. Bruce comentó que «aunque el disco se escribió en New Jersey, la mitad de su contenido trata sobre las ideas y sueños vividos en Nueva York». Sobresalieron New York City Serenade, E Street Shuffle y Wild Billy’s Circus Story. En algunos de estos temas partició Richard Blackwell a la percusión. Este músico participó en dicho disco.

De las peticiones de los fans, Bruce escogió Glory Days (dedicada a los Yankees de NYC) y Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?. Y en los bises, presencia de Elvis Costello en Higher And Higher.
